Icelandic Presidence

The Nordic Council of Ministers was created by Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in 1971. The Faroe Islands, Greenland and Aland were then added.

The presidency is supported on a rotating basis by the top 5 countries. Each state has one vote.

The ministries meet in groups based on their responsibilities and make decisions which then apply to all member states. Rules and procedures are based on the Helsinki Treaty, signed in 1962 and revised until 1996. The goal is to ensure that the group of these countries is the most sustainable and integrated in the world by 2030.

The activity is carried out through research, coordination, discussion and approval of documents analyzing the natural phenomena that concern these countries and of guidelines for implementing policies that neutralize their negative effects.

In a policy paper and study entitled "Nordic Perspectives on Transboundary Climate Risk" from the Nordic Council of Ministers they show how floods and forest fires and other climate changes cascade across borders, with resulting for example in higher prices or disruptions in food supplies. The report makes recommendations on how the Nordic countries can better address these risks together.

Among the initiatives, an award for projects that reduce our ecological footprint through innovations of different types, including those in the social and technological fields. In 2019 it will be about sustainable consumption and production.
The Nordic Council finances projects aimed at improving environmental conditions and which add value to the territories in which they operate. This is an average of 500 projects per year.

The topics for which funds have been allocated are published on the Nordic Cooperation website. Some titles are reported to understand the vastness of the topics these countries deal with.
